WebDestroy all the backpacks in your fortress and keep none in inventory so they can't equip them. They use those to carry food, and if they can't carry food, they can't dump food in the barracks when they take off their backpack... which they don't have anymore. They'll get hungry on patrol, but to me it's worth the tradeoff.
